On Saturday February 15, 2020, SWE HA participate in the Special Agency Judging at the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH). We had a great time judging middle and high school female students science fair projects with subjects ranging from the utilization of a flex-sensor glove to measure rehab of patients to the effects of whole plastics pieces in concrete on strength. It was a great opportunity to represent SWE and continue in our mission to encourage and motivate young girls in the community. This year we will award two winners, one from the junior and senior division, the SWE-HA Aspire Award, which includes a campership scholarship totaling up to $500 each towards attendance to a STEM camp of their choice over summer. All awards and recognition, including the Junior and Senior division runner-up, will be held out our annual Awards Banquet in April. We judged over 40+ projects this year and many thanks to the volunteers for assisting with this: Tamara R., Victoria H. Agata S., Emily B. and Ann T.

I’m excited to write and ask that you all help me congratulate Tamara Rodriguez on being the 2020 Young Engineer of the Year for the Houston Area section of SWE! Tamara was nominated for this award because of her active involvement and leadership within SWE-HA. For the past several years she has been one of the leaders for our Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. She has chaired the planning committee and done a fantastic job creating an event that encourages girls to explore STEM. But Tamara won this award for more than just hard work. She brings a passion and joy to her volunteer work that is infections and inspires those of that have been working in engineering for years. Tamara, as a friend, a SWE member, and an engineer, THANK YOU for all that you do for our society and I wish you the best luck as you continue your career and volunteer work! CONGRATULATIONS! |
