On Saturday, April 15, from 9am-11:30am, the Society of Women Engineers Houston Area section hosted a Think Like An Engineer Badge Day - Brownies for the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto. There were over 25 students in attendance where we did three engineering activities with the students in order for them to earn a badge. By far the most liked activity was the Ice Cream Special activity. This activity involved using the principles of heat transfer and phase changes (liquid to gas and gas to liquid) to make their very own ice cream, which they really enjoyed eating afterwards. The second activity, Safe Landing, allowed students to be rocket scientists and create a spacecraft that would safely allow astronauts to land. Lastly, students built a pipeline to allow a liquid to flow from a higher elevation to a lower one and the designs were amazing. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped with the session, everyone had a great time.

We had an amazing virtual Women’s Month Women in Engineering panel on Thursday, March 30, 2023. We thank all of our speakers for taking the time to share their journey with us. Check out the video, key takeaways and advice for women:
"Equity is the mechanism to get to equality" Equity is making sure everyone is at the same starting line so we all have an equal chance When looking to move positions, ask, “How diverse is the leadership line?” If the chain of command doesn’t look anything like how you look, they haven’t decoded their own bias yet. Be wary of the “organizational myth” where anyone can start a story, true or not. Not only do you need mentors, but you must have sponsors too. Make sure your name is attached to good things and that people in your organization see your name often. If you help someone out or mentor them, and they thank you behind the scenes, ask instead for them to send a note of thanks and copy their boss or your boss. Advice & parting words: Network often and understand what it truly means – to make powerful 1-on-1, authentic connections both inside and outside your company. (Stephanie) The sooner you can figure out your strategy and where you want to go, the better. Does your industry and company have the ingredients for your success? Do they align with your brand? If not, you may need to leave. (Nelia) Don’t be afraid to embrace pivoting. Sometimes the more efficient route is to pivot. (Renita) Take the time to understand personal financing and investing. Not knowing about or talking about money is disempowering (Sandy). |
