I've been a bit behind posting about the events our awesome leadership team has been putting together for the section! They are and have been hard at working making sure there is still lots going on and resources available! On September 18, 2020 Kyleni Rivers, a computer engineer and SWE member joined the students at Alvin High School SWENext Club for an interview where the leader and students asked her questions about her profession and experiences. She later wrote:
“It was a great opportunity to share my perspective of computer engineering with high school students.“ She also mentioned that the teacher’s initiative of reaching out to engineers and having them talked to the students is a great way of exposing them to the different careers. What a better way to help the next generation than to share your experiences and your knowledge.
Ms. Rivers an energetic and talented engineer is always looking for opportunities to share her knowledge and help guide the future generations of engineers. And today is no different, please share with your children, students, neighbors, co-workers this great 5-tips she has so kindly provided:
Take advantage of dual classes. It helps reduce cost, time, and prepares you for college courses.
- It is okay not to know exactly what you want to do. A way to help you narrow down what you would like to study in college or what you want to do is signing up for classes like AutoCAD, programming, and others while in High School. Do not chase money.
- You are going to have to adjust to self teaching. If college is your route, what you learn in the classroom is not enough.
- If looking into Computer Engineering, remember, it is rapidly changing. You might know a programming language that is in demand currently, but might not be next moth. Make sure you stay up to date on your knowledge.
- Join organizations in school, or volunteer to gain experience.

Fall 2020 School Year has been an interesting one for each and everyone, from the students, to the parents, to the teachers, to the school administration, to the school bus drivers! And it is with a warm heart that I extend a big thank you to all the SWEsters in the Houston Chapter for your kind donations.
I was able to meet with Mrs. Rael on Oct. 15th to drop off the supplies that were purchased with your donations and that they were in high demand at the school before opening on Monday, Oct 19 to the students, only 50% capacity. She so kindly gave me a tour of the school and I was able to see all the teachers that were preparing the rooms with fiberglass and spaced out the desks to meet the health guidelines.
From Mrs. Rael: “Me and the rest of the staff were so excited for the supplies and we appreciate you and all the donors, Thank you SWE!”
Thank you SWEsters for your kindness and support for the students at STEP Charter Middle School at Wilcrest Dr.
Stay safe and healthy,
