Outreach
SWE-HA actively creates and participates in outreach events that support our mission to encourage young bright ladies in pursuing a career in STEM. We always welcome volunteers who can help with scholarship committee/judging, STEM toy drive in November, girl scouts badge day, and many other events. We also have many opportunities where you can test and sharpen your leadership skills by becoming a chair or committee member. Be sure to revisit this page to see upcoming volunteer opportunities or subscribe to our newsletter!

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
Alief STEM Speakers - General Request
We are excited to be working with Alief ISD and their high school students in the ASES Program. The ASES program allows high school students to graduate with an Associate of Science in Engineering Science degree through Houston Community College, in tandem with their high school diploma!
We are looking for STEM speakers who can meet with these students (virtually or in-person) to discuss an array of topics. The different types of topics can include college interviews, what college is like, your degree & school experience, what your job is now and how you got there, general mentorship to students, etc. The topic of discussion can be decided upon between the students and our speakers.
Our goal is to create an inventory of STEM speakers we can offer to these students to help prepare them for entering college and ultimately the real world! The time and dates are flexible for this opportunity. We are seeking volunteer speakers who can reach out to these students anytime between Monday-Friday during the rest of the semester. Any in-person speaking opportunities will be on the west side of town, at Houston Community College - Alief Hayes Campus.
For more information, or if you are interested in this opportunity, please reach out to Amanda Hafemeister at vp_careerguidance@houstonswe.org.
Rice Center for Engineering Leadership (RCEL)
RCEL’s mission is to inspire, educate, and develop, ethical leaders in technology who will excel in research, industry, non-engineering career paths, or entrepreneurship.
RCEL’s programing enhances a traditional engineering education by providing skills not typically covered in the Rice engineering curriculum. Through a series of curricular and co-curricular learning experiences, RCEL students learn to create and communicate a vision, build a high-performing team, form and execute collaborative plans, and create innovations that endure.
RCEL welcomes professionals who have leadership or project management experience to participate as guest observers in our leadership labs. Because the focus of the labs is leadership rather than technical problem-solving, this opportunity is not limited to any specific engineering field. Rather, the crucial prerequisites are leadership experience and interest in working with students.
Engineer in the Room is a compact (about two hours) but rewarding opportunity to share the benefit of your experience with some of Rice’s brightest and most ambitious students. You will observe the students as they work through a scenario in class, and provide coaching and feedback when they finish.

Annual SWE-HA Outreach Events
SWE-HA - Introduce a Girl to Engineering (IAGTE)
The Society of Women Engineers Houston Area (SWE-HA) chapter’s signature outreach event is Introduce a Girl to Engineering (IAGTE)! Partnering with local collegiate sections, SWE-HA coordinates a free, all day event providing hands on interactive STEM workshops to expose girls to different disciplines of engineering. The students have the opportunity to meet women engineers and technologists and hear first-hand about these exciting career paths. Through interactive demonstrations and panel discussions, girls are able to experience the creativity and innovation that occurs in the field of engineering and technology.
In addition to the activities for students, parents, guardians, teachers, counselors, administrators, and community leaders are encouraged to participate in the Parent Educator Program (PEP). During the program participants learn about engineering careers, scholarships, college admission and resources, network with SWE members as well as other parents and educators, participate in a panel discussion with select SWE members and outreach experts, complete a hands-on activity, and learn best practices for engineering projects with girls. This annual event is held in the fall each year.

Girl Scouts Badge Day
Girl Scouts and SWE-HA encourage Girl Scouts and their leaders to spend a day doing activities to fulfill almost all the requirements for a badge related to STEM. A typical badge is the “Think like an Engineer Badge” where Brownies complete hands on engineering projects guided by female engineers.
